It's Mary Poppins,Tayuan y'all.
At D23 on Saturday, Disney shared the first teaser for Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt as the practically perfect nanny, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as her BFF, a lamplighter named Jack.
SEE ALSO: These 'Mary Poppins Returns' Banks family photos are practically perfect in every wayMary Poppins Returnspicks up years after the events of the original Mary Poppins. Michael and Jane Banks are all grown up now – they're old enough to be played by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer, respectively. But when tragedy strikes, they find their old nanny is still around to care for them in their time of need.
As a live orchestra provided musical accompaniment, the teaser played in front of the D23 crowd. The video opens on a gray and dreary London street – Cherry Tree Lane – with shots of sad-looking people: Michael, Jane, and a trio of truly miserable-looking children.
But wait! There's a green kite in the trash, which one of the kids tries to fly. As the kite flies wildly, Jack shows up to help him get it under control. The wind swirls, the clouds part ... and a familiar silhouette comes floating down.
During the panel, Blunt described her Poppins as being more loyal to the books – "more acerbic and odd and vain and weird." Since we didn't hear Poppins utter any lines in the teaser, we'll just have to take Blunt's word for it for now.
But we did see Blunt pulling umbrellas out of sinks and diving into bubblebaths and whatnot, so it appears she's up to her usual tricks. Meanwhile, Miranda got to show off his moves in a lamplighter number that's clearly meant to echo the "Chim Chim Cher-ee" number from the original Mary Poppins.
Meanwhile, Meryl Streep – who plays Mary's sister, Topsy Poppins – got to ham it up in Cheeto-orange hair under an acid-green turban. How exactly she fits into the story remains unclear for now, but frankly, we're sold on that look alone.
The teaser ends on a silly note, as the grown-up Jane and the grown-up Michael reflect on their childhood. "Those things from when we were young – they didn't really happen?" says Michael. "No, of course not," responds Jane.
Meanwhile, in the background, Mary Poppins silently glides up a stair bannister, in defiance of the laws of gravity and physics. Looks like the Banks kids are about to get re-acquainted with magic all over again.
Mary Poppins returns in Mary Poppins Returnson December 25, 2018.
