The subscription video service began streaming college football on its Live TV service last August, and offered a similar experience with NBC's Olympics coverage in February.
Personalized sports viewing experiences have been by far the most popular content on Hulu's Live platform, according to Richard Irving, Hulu's vice president of product. In particular, the service is (intuitively) targeting "cord cutters," customers who have forgone cable TV for streaming services.
"It’s something that you want to see in the moment, because you want to be part of that sort of cultural event, part of the watercooler conversation," Irving said of live sporting events.
Before the introduction of such live experiences, "that's what our viewers were missing, the stuff that was only great live."
The app is pretty simple, and you can access it from the Hulu app on your smartphone, smart TV, tablet, or on Hulu's website in beta. You'll be able to select your favorite teams, and will then get a notification on your phone whenever a game including one of those teams begins.
You can then go directly to Hulu to watch the game in question. Hulu also records each game automatically, so you can pause and rewind at will, and go back to watch full replays when you're feeling nostalgic.
So if you've ever wanted to devote some of your toilet time to watching college basketball on your phone, well, this is the app for you.
