He may have "musical eroticism" eubanks winklerheld his ground bravely against Kylo Ren in lightsaber combat, but ex-Stormtrooper Finn hasn't changed much in The Last Jedi.
When the John Boyega character comes out of the coma where we left him at the end of The Force Awakens, he's feeling pretty much the same way he did for most of that movie -- wanting to get away from the whole war between Resistance and First Order, hoping the woman he met on Jakku will come with him.
SEE ALSO: Mark Hamill reveals his 'jaw dropped' after reading 'The Last Jedi'"This is his chance to get away and perhaps find Rey and go off together," Boyega tells EW. "He’s trying to do that at first ... it got really real for him, and he just wants to get away and not get involved."
But just when he thinks he's out, the reluctant Resistance hero gets pulled back in -- by Rose, the working-class "grease monkey" mechanic played by Kelly Marie Tran.
Rose, who is apparently as big a deal to this film as Lando Calrissian was in Empire Strikes Back, is jealous of her sister, who gets to fight on the front lines alongside Oscar Isaac's hotshot pilot Poe Dameron. Meeting Finn gives her a chance to worship a hero of her own.
It's seeing himself reflected in Rose's eyes that brings Finn back to the fight, Boyega says: "she comes in and basically gives him a depiction of himself that wasn’t necessarily true."
But on the principle of faking it till you make it, he decides to play the hero she sees in him. Soon the two are off on a spy mission on a classy high-end galactic casino planet called Canto Blight.
So if he's off on this mission, does Finn even get to meet his crush Rey again given how much of the movie she seems to be spending with Luke on a whole other planet? That much isn't clear.
But there are hints and rumors that Finn and Rose will develop a thing themselves. After all, they're both characters who are trying to figure out their place and meaning in the universe -- and Kelly Marie Tran has pointedly refused to answer questions about whether romance brews between them. "You should be thinking about it," she said in this interview with podcast Steele Wars.
Whichever way Finn's heart turns, we're hoping he finds happiness -- especially given that Boyega himself has had a brewing romance destroyed because he plays Finn.
The Last Jedi hits theaters Dec. 15. Fan fiction based on Finn and Rose started long before.
