Under Castro's regime, thousands of exiles and refugees fled to the U.S. fearing persecution, and to escape a tightening economy under the revolution's new socialist order.
Many came to the U.S. through programs such as Operation Pedro Pan as minors, while others braved the seas in events such as the Mariel boat lift in 1980, when 125,000 refugees came to the U.S. after Castro declared "anyone who wants to leave Cuba can do so."
As these videos show, animosity towards Castro has not lessened in parts of Miami, even as relations between Cuba and the U.S. steadily improve.
